Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek

Intimate ridge-walk trek to Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500m) beneath Machapuchare's sheer ice face. Escape crowds on this wild, scenic trail through ancient rhododendron forests and dramatic alpine ridges.

Description

The Mardi Himal Base Camp trek is an intimate, wildly scenic ridge-walk that offers a profound sense of wilderness and solitude, far removed from the heavily trodden stone staircases of the main Annapurna trails. Over 10 perfectly paced days, you will ascend the steep, forested flanks of the Machapuchare (Fishtail) massif. Your journey begins in the lush, traditional Gurung villages of Dhampus, slowly climbing through ancient, moss-draped forests of oak and vibrant rhododendron. As you push above the tree line at High Camp, the landscape transforms into a dramatic, wind-scoured alpine ridge. The physical climax of your trek requires a grueling, pre-dawn push along a narrow, rocky spine to reach Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500m). Standing directly beneath the sheer, terrifying, ice-fluted face of Machapuchare, you are rewarded with an impossibly close, unobstructed panorama of the Annapurna giants before making a sweeping, scenic descent through the terraced hills of Landruk.

  • Route Type: High-Altitude Ridge Traverse (Teahouse Trek)
  • Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging (Involves steep, continuous ascents and a narrow alpine ridge walk)
  • Maximum Altitude: 4,500m / 14,764 ft (Mardi Himal Base Camp)

  • Permit Requirements: Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) Permit, Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS) Card.
  • Insurance Requirement: Mandatory. Comprehensive travel insurance covering helicopter rescue and medical evacuation up to 5,000m is strictly required.

Itinerary

1

Arrival in Kathmandu

Your Himalayan adventure begins as you touch down in the vibrant capital of Kathmandu. Upon clearing customs, you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel. Your evening is dedicated to an official welcome briefing with your lead trekking guide. You will run through a comprehensive check of your trekking gear, finalize your ACAP permits, and ensure you are perfectly prepared for the steep, forested trails ahead.

2

Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara & Dhampus

You will board a private vehicle early in the morning to escape the Kathmandu Valley. The drive takes you along the paved Prithvi Highway, following the winding curves of the Trishuli River through subtropical terraced hillsides. Arriving in the lakeside city of Pokhara in the afternoon, you will immediately transfer to a rugged local jeep for the steep, 1-hour winding drive up the hillside to Dhampus. This beautifully preserved Gurung village sits on a high ridge, offering your first spectacular, glowing sunset views of the Annapurna range.

3

Trek from Dhampus to Forest Camp

Your foot journey officially begins today. Leaving the terraced agricultural fields of Dhampus and Pothana behind, you will step off the main Annapurna trails and plunge directly into a deep, silent, and ancient forest. The trail climbs relentlessly upward through dense canopies of oak, maple, hemlock, and vibrant rhododendron. The air is cool, damp, and deeply fragrant. You will arrive at the tiny, deeply shaded clearing of Forest Camp (locally known as Kokar) to rest for the night.

4

Trek from Forest Camp to Low Camp

The ascent continues up the steep spine of the ridge. As you hike higher, the dense, subtropical jungle begins to thin out dramatically, replaced by stunted rhododendron bushes and alpine scrub. The temperature drops noticeably as you cross the 2,500-meter mark. Breaking out of the tree line entirely, you are suddenly hit with mind-bending, unobstructed views of Machapuchare soaring directly ahead. You will arrive at the isolated teahouses of Low Camp, perched directly on the ridgeline, just in time for a hot lunch.

5

Trek from Low Camp to High Camp

You are now entirely exposed to the raw elements of the high Himalayas. The trail follows a dramatic, grassy ridge that cuts a sharp line toward the mountains. You will walk above the clouds, with the Modi Khola valley plunging thousands of feet down to your left, and the Mardi Khola valley dropping to your right. The air becomes significantly thinner, making your pace slow and deliberate. You will arrive at High Camp, a freezing, wind-battered cluster of lodges, where you will eat a heavy dinner and attempt to sleep, mentally preparing for tomorrow's alpine push.

6

Trek to Mardi Himal Base Camp & Return to Badal Danda

The absolute physical climax of your trek. You will wake well before dawn, strapping on your headlamp to tackle the steep, narrow, and often rocky spine of the upper ridge. The climb is grueling and utterly oxygen-deprived. As the sun rises, the ice-fluted face of Machapuchare turns a brilliant, blinding gold. You will push past the Upper Viewpoint to finally stand at Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500m). The sheer scale of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and the Fishtail towering directly above you is terrifying and magnificent. After celebrating your massive achievement, you face a long, knee-jarring descent all the way back past High Camp, dropping down to the slightly warmer, incredibly scenic ridge of Badal Danda to sleep.

7

Trek from Badal Danda to Landruk

Your retreat from the extreme altitude accelerates rapidly. Plunging off the high ridge, you will take a steep, heavily forested trail that drops relentlessly down the mountainside. The massive loss in elevation and the sudden return of thick, heavy oxygen will make the hiking feel surprisingly effortless. Emerging from the forest canopy, you will arrive at the sprawling, picturesque village of Landruk. Famous for its traditional slate-roofed houses and rich Gurung heritage, you will spend the afternoon exploring the narrow alleyways overlooking the Modi Khola gorge.

8

Trek from Landruk to Pokhara

Your final hours on the trail. You will drop down to the river and follow the undulating, subtropical paths of the lower valley. The air becomes intensely warm and humid as you hike through vibrant farming communities. Reaching the road-head at Lumle or Kande, your trekking boots finally come off! You will board a private vehicle for the short drive back to Pokhara, checking into your hotel for a long, luxurious hot shower and a celebratory dinner by the tranquil waters of Phewa Lake.

9

Drive / Fly from Pokhara to Kathmandu

You will make the final journey back to the capital. Whether you opt for a spectacular 25-minute domestic flight past the Manaslu range or the winding, scenic drive along the Prithvi Highway, you will arrive back in the sensory overload of Kathmandu by the afternoon. The evening is yours to shop for final souvenirs in Thamel, enjoy a Nepalese coffee, and share a massive farewell dinner with your trekking team to celebrate your success.

10

Departure from Kathmandu

Your epic 10-day high-altitude journey comes to an end. Depending on your flight schedule, you will be transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward journey, heading home with the elite accomplishment of conquering the Mardi Himal ridge.
