Annapurna Circuit Trek

The classic Annapurna Circuit trek with 4x4 approach to Chame. Circumnavigate the entire Annapurna Massif, cross Thorong La Pass (5,416m), and experience diverse ecosystems from subtropical to high-altitude desert.

Description

The Annapurna Circuit is globally celebrated as one of the greatest long-distance treks on Earth. Over 15 days, you will circumnavigate the entire Annapurna Massif, witnessing a mind-bending transition of ecosystems, cultures, and climates. By utilizing rugged 4x4 off-road tracks for the initial approach to Chame, this optimized itinerary bypasses the humid lower roads, plunging you directly into the high-altitude heart of the Marsyangdi River valley. You will trek through ancient, Tibetan-influenced villages like Upper Pisang and Manang, surrounded by the towering ice walls of Annapurna II, III, and Gangapurna. The ultimate physical and emotional crux of the expedition demands conquering the freezing, lung-busting heights of the Thorong La Pass (5,416m). Surviving the summit, you will cross the high-altitude divide and plunge into the arid, wind-scoured, lunar-like landscapes of Lower Mustang, walking the deepest river gorge in the world before flying out to the lakeside paradise of Pokhara.

  • Route Type: High-Altitude Regional Circuit Traverse (with 4x4 approach & flight exit)
  • Difficulty: Strenuous (Involves a massive 5,416m pass crossing and extreme altitude changes)
  • Maximum Altitude: 5,416m / 17,769 ft (Thorong La Pass)
  • Accommodation: Traditional Teahouses and Mountain Lodges
  • Permit Requirements: Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) Permit, Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS) Card.
  • Insurance Requirement: Mandatory. Comprehensive travel insurance covering high-altitude helicopter rescue and medical evacuation up to 6,000m is strictly required.

Itinerary

1

Arrival in Kathmandu

Your monumental Himalayan adventure begins as you touch down in the bustling capital of Kathmandu. Upon clearing customs, you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel. Your evening is dedicated to an official welcome briefing with your lead trekking guide. You will run through a comprehensive check of your cold-weather gear, finalize your ACAP permits, and ensure your pack is perfectly dialed in for the extreme temperature variations of the circuit.

2

Drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar

You will board a private vehicle early in the morning to escape the Kathmandu Valley. The drive takes you along the paved Prithvi Highway, following the winding curves of the Trishuli River. The climate is warm and subtropical as you weave through vibrant terraced hillsides and rural farming communities. By early afternoon, you will arrive at the bustling administrative hub of Besisahar, where you will check into your teahouse and transition your gear for tomorrow's off-road journey.

3

Drive / Transfer from Besisahar to Chame

You will board a heavy-duty 4x4 jeep for an incredibly visceral, adrenaline-pumping off-road adventure. Bypassing days of lower-elevation trekking on dusty roads, the jeep will crawl up a narrow, cliff-hugging dirt track carved directly into the Marsyangdi gorge. You will drive under massive cascading waterfalls and over rocky, landslide-prone sections. As you gain over 1,900 meters in elevation, the humidity breaks, and the air becomes crisp and cool. You will arrive in Chame, the administrative headquarters of the Manang District, completely surrounded by dense pine forests and excellent views of Lamjung Himal.

4

Trek from Chame to Upper Pisang

Your foot journey officially begins today. You will trek through a steep, narrow valley shrouded in deep pine and fir forests, crossing the roaring Marsyangdi River via a massive suspension bridge. The trail climbs dramatically onto an exposed rock face before leveling out. As you round the bend into the U-shaped upper valley, the massive, curved granite slab of Paungda Danda rises 1,500 meters directly out of the river. You will tackle a final, steep climb to reach the traditional stone houses and ancient monastery of Upper Pisang, where you are rewarded with sweeping views of Annapurna II.

5

Trek from Upper Pisang to Manang

You will leave the tree line entirely behind, entering the high, arid, and wind-scoured trans-Himalayan zone. The trail winds through sprawling yak pastures. (Note: Taking the higher, steeper route through the ancient villages of Ghyaru and Ngawal is highly recommended today for the absolute best, unobstructed views of the Annapurna range). You will walk past massive, intricately carved mani walls and Buddhist chortens. The landscape feels vast and deeply isolated as you make the final, dusty push into Manang, a bustling high-altitude hub directly beneath the towering peaks of Gangapurna and Annapurna III.

6

Acclimatization / Exploration in Manang

Because you have gained altitude rapidly over the last few days, today is a mandatory active rest day. To prepare your lungs for the Thorong La pass, you must adhere to the "climb high, sleep low" rule. You have the option to take a short, steep hike up to the viewpoint above the Gangapurna Glacier, or tackle the much longer, punishing ascent toward the Ice Lake (~4,800m). Pushing your elevation today ensures you sleep soundly tonight in the thinner air of Manang.

7

Trek from Manang to Yak Kharka

You will leave the main valley behind, following a smaller tributary stream upward. The environment becomes noticeably harsher, dominated by alpine scrub, juniper, and vast grazing pastures for yaks and wild Blue Sheep. The trail climbs steadily but gradually, ensuring you don't overexert yourself in the thinning air. You will arrive at the tiny, wind-battered settlement of Yak Kharka by early afternoon, allowing plenty of time to rest and hydrate.

8

Trek from Yak Kharka to Thorong Phedi

The air is exceptionally thin, making every step of today's short trek deeply fatiguing. You will cross a suspension bridge and navigate a narrow, highly exposed trail that cuts across a volatile, rockfall-prone scree slope. Maintaining focus and steady footing is critical here. You will arrive at Thorong Phedi—a bleak, freezing cluster of lodges nestled at the absolute base of the pass. You will eat a heavy carbohydrate dinner early and attempt to sleep, mentally preparing for the massive alpine start.

9

Cross Thorong La Pass & Trek to Muktinath

The absolute physical and emotional crux of your expedition. You will wake at 3:00 AM in sub-zero temperatures. The climb up to the pass is a grueling, seemingly endless slog over frozen rocky switchbacks and packed snow. Reaching the prayer-flag-draped summit of Thorong La (5,416m) at sunrise, you officially cross the high-altitude divide separating the Manang and Mustang regions. You are rewarded with a mind-blowing panorama of the Dhaulagiri range. What follows is a massive, knee-jarring, 1,600-meter descent down steep, loose scree slopes. Dropping off the ice, you will limp into the sacred temple complex of Muktinath, a profound pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists, before checking into your teahouse.

10

Trek from Muktinath to Kagbeni

Your retreat from the extreme altitude accelerates rapidly. You will drop down from the temple complex into the arid, desert-like landscapes of Lower Mustang. The massive loss in elevation and the return of rich, heavy oxygen provides an incredible surge of physical energy. You will hike through the ancient, picturesque villages of Jharkot and Khingar, featuring spectacular Tibetan architecture, before arriving at Kagbeni. This stunning, medieval-feeling oasis town sits right on the edge of the restricted Upper Mustang border, surrounded by vibrant green apple orchards.

11

Trek from Kagbeni to Jomsom

You will trek along the massive, rocky riverbed of the Kali Gandaki—the deepest river gorge in the world, flanked by the 8,000-meter peaks of Annapurna I and Dhaulagiri. You must start early, as notoriously fierce, howling headwinds rip through the gorge every afternoon. Navigating the dusty, wind-scoured riverbed, you will search for ancient Shaligram fossils before arriving in the bustling administrative and transport hub of Jomsom. Your trekking boots finally come off!

12

Fly from Jomsom to Pokhara

You will board a tiny Twin Otter aircraft early in the morning for one of the most spectacular mountain flights on Earth. The plane flies directly through the Kali Gandaki gorge, soaring between the colossal, ice-capped peaks of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. Leaving the harsh alpine desert behind, you will touch down in the warm, lush, subtropical paradise of Pokhara. You will transfer to your hotel, finally enjoying a deeply luxurious hot shower.

13

Rest / Sightseeing in Pokhara

After nearly two weeks of grueling physical exertion, today is entirely dedicated to recovery and relaxation. You can spend the day enjoying a massive breakfast, boating on the tranquil waters of Phewa Lake, getting a much-needed massage, or simply sitting in a lakeside cafe staring back up at the Annapurna massif you just conquered.

14

Drive / Fly from Pokhara to Kathmandu

You will make the final journey back to the capital. Whether you opt for a short domestic flight or the winding drive along the Prithvi Highway, you will arrive back in the sensory overload of Kathmandu by the afternoon. The evening is yours to shop for souvenirs in Thamel and enjoy a massive farewell dinner with your trekking guide to celebrate your success.

15

Departure from Kathmandu

Your epic 15-day trans-Himalayan journey comes to an end. Depending on your flight schedule, you will be transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward journey, heading home with the elite accomplishment of conquering the complete Annapurna Circuit.
